Dogs should never be allowed to eat foods with onions in any form as it would have dangerous effects on the dog. The poisonous effect of onions is dose dependent. As the dog will not outwardly be affected by eating small amounts of onions, the owner will continue feeding the dog until an accumulation of toxicity affects the dog seriously.

The theosulphates substance found in onions cannot be digested by dogs as our furry friends do not have the enzyme necessary for the substance to undergo metabolism. Undigested, the theosulphate will oxidize the hemoglobin and cause the premature destruction of the red blood cells. The red blood cells contain the protein molecule hemoglobin whose main function is to carry oxygen to all the cells and tissues of the body. However, this function will be impaired if hemoglobin is oxidized and bubble-like clumps are formed in the red blood cells.

The bubble-like clumps called Heinz bodies will rupture and prematurely destroy the red blood cells so that less oxygen is delivered to the parts of the body. The affected dog will develop hemolytic anemia, a condition that causes the dog to vomit and have diarrhea. A bloodied urine, increased heart rate and breathing difficulties are symptoms of this condition. We love our dogs but there instances where an owner has to be to be mean to the dog. Resist the woeful expression on the dog's eyes. Never ever give the dog onions!
