ESC smokes: try moving over the bad ESC with a functioning person to see if it's the ESC or electric motor(if the new ESC smokes, it's the motor if the new ESC doesn't smoke, it was only a bad ESC) OR move the engine with another known good one. if the ESC still smokes then it's the ESC, if it doesnt smoke again, it was the motor(touching phases), but that will require that the ESC works (the one which smoked).
