ESC smokes: try transitioning the bad ESC with a functioning person to see if it's the ESC or motor unit(if the new ESC smokes, it is the motor if the new ESC doesn't smoke, it was only a bad ESC) OR swap the engine with another known good one. if the ESC still smokes then it's the ESC, if it doesnt smoke again, it was the motor(coming in contact with stages), but that will require that the ESC works (the the one that smoked).
