As mentioned, Vortex Ring Express (VRS), aka Electricity Settling, aka Knife Stall, is common to all or any rotorcraft. It's experienced whenever a rotorcraft descends vertically prematurely. From this point on, let's assume that the rotorcraft is a quadcopter. The quadcopter's propeller cutting blades may descend in to the turbulent downwash under the build. If this occurs, the cutting blades lose some lift, causing a straight faster descent in to the downwash. A vortex also starts off to form in a round wedding ring (the Vortex Band) about the blade's route of rotation. This vortex suck turblent air from under the blades to the most notable of the rotor blades. Applying throttle just increases the vortex ring, eventually causing total loss of lift up from the blades.
