Goal: Complicate the graph theory model (please add your links and notes ;)

Graph nodes/ Edges

Notes on graph: Refer to drawings

  • Positions of nodes are irrelevant.
  • Nodes can be moved, as long as edges are preserved.
  • Next, give names to nodes
  • Nodes in a square matrix.
  • Then, create a 0-1's matrix
  • NOW we can do crazy things with this

What were talking about:

If you were to draw out the entire social graph, it would be complicated.

In particular, the Weaponized Social crowd, there are some things to consider...

Percolation problem

We got this big graph.

Attack nodes at random

How many to take out before it was not connected component?

What would you have to expect to take out if you were taking out nodes at random.

Basically "How do you destroy the internet?"

if you could tell what degree nodes have, would only have to take out ones with high degree of nodes.

Contagion problem

Biological containment: Susceptible, infected, recovered

Now think about it in terms of...

Social Contagion

May adopt behavior because neighbors adopting, or adopting because it's popular.

"the cool factor" - to adopt

"the anti-cool factor" - not too adopt

Voter Model

Influenced to have consensus of +1


Next: Let's RUIN graph theory (refer to diagram)

There is no reason that an edge has to be size 2. There can be a size 3 edge, etc. etc.

"Digital information does not need to be put on one shelf"
"Can we categorize people like that?"
"Not everything has to be nested, it can be sloppy."
"Should communities be inclusive or exclusive? "

Adding new shapes and components: Points/Lines/Surface

By virtue of having a filled in triangle, I have edges and I have vertices.

We are having a conversation that everyone can hear and see or engage. But two of us in it can engage with it, or whisper. That two person conversation can have facts. All three people have access to it, and it's known with the facts.

The analysis of how you deal with holes in the network. Where and how can there be holes?

The amount of information that can shared is more; clear there is a mathmatics about how the surface area is larger. Being able to do the comparison of surface area at the dimensional level of groups is noticeable.

Take an affiliation network. This could be Twitter messages and people. You find a lot of things that you miss.

What are things our group is attached to?

You can also use it for more fun points of marketing. There is a wide spread...

The more people that you can reach, the more you can find someone specialized for the task.


A bunch of people read a news article that just appeared and adding it to something they read or want to read.

Everyone that has read it. "It's a good time to remind them when they come back"

Who consistently adds things before their friends.

How things move through that group of people.


How to think through a hate storm:

Person star creates media artifact to share with their 3 people

Works because they are holding the room

Notion of context escape

This person ends up getting it through a different affiliation.

Now it is here. There are a bazillion of people.

And now it is spread.

Or they are adding outside context.

And everyone sees it.

  • Subgraphs are relevant. "What kind of subgraph do you have?"
  • "with common vocabulary we can exchange information faster.
